On January 12, 1975, Brian attended a party on Southeast State Street near 25th in Salem, Oregon, accompanied by his sister and two friends. At some point during the evening, Brian’s sister and one of their friends briefly left the party. At that time, Brian was listening to music with a male friend, David. Upon their return after 2:00 a.m., Brian informed his sister and friend that David had taken LSD, was experiencing a bad trip, and had left the area. Brian’s companions urged him to go after David. Brian and David got into David’s vehicle—a turquoise 1962 Volkswagen Bug with a black left front fender and Oregon license plate number 7P3626. David was arrested at 5:00 a.m. after stealing a car from a dealership and being caught speeding. He was still under the influence of LSD and claimed to have no knowledge of Brian’s whereabouts. Brian has not been seen or heard from again, and the vehicle he was in has never been recovered. Initially, the case was classified as a runaway, but Brian’s family strongly believes he would not have left voluntarily.
