Carol was last seen on May 31, 1958, at 3:35 p.m., waiting for a bus outside the Crown Motel in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She planned to take the bus to the Naval Air Technical Training Center, where her husband worked, so they could travel to Norman, Oklahoma, to look for an apartment. However, she never boarded the bus and was never seen again. Carol and her husband, 18-year-old Dennis E. Batterman, were high school sweethearts from Westchester, Illinois, who had married just two weeks earlier. The night before she disappeared, Carol wrote to her parents, expressing happiness in her marriage. She left behind her luggage, clothing, jewelry, and $100 in cash at their motel. A witness reported seeing a gray pickup truck, possibly a 1953 Ford, stop near Carol. The driver, described as a slender-built man around 40 years old, wore khaki clothing and a Western-style straw hat. Carol was seen talking to him beside the open truck door. When the witness looked away and back, both Carol and the truck were gone. Itβs unclear if she entered the vehicle willingly.
