Cassandra Hailey and Richard Call went on their first date on April 9, 1988. Richard picked Cassandra up from her home in Grafton, Virginia, and they were last seen at a party in Newport News around 1:30 a.m. on April 10. At 7:00 a.m. that morning, Richardβs red 1982 Toyota Celica was found abandoned at the York River Overlook on Colonial Parkway in Yorktown, Virginia, though it was not reported to authorities until 9:00 a.m. The car appeared undisturbed, with the keys on the driverβs seat, a watch and eyeglasses on the dashboard, and some of Cassandra and Richard's clothing in the back. There was no sign of Cassandra or Richard. Authorities initially suspected they had gone swimming and drowned, but an extensive search of the river found no evidence. Cassandra was also known to be afraid of water. Between 1986 and 1989, three other young couplesβall college studentsβwere found murdered off Colonial Parkway, their vehicles left abandoned with most of their possessions inside. Cassandra and Richard remain the only couple never found.
