Voltaire was last seen on January 8, 2011, at her apartment in the Berkshire Apartments complex in Winter Haven, Florida. She lived alone and was studying nuclear medicine at Keiser University. That evening, Charles Pierre-Gilles, her neighbor and the brother of her boyfriend, Dieuseul Pierre-Gilles, visited her to borrow her car. Voltaire, dressed in a black robe, was in bed drinking tea and doing homework. She mentioned feeling unwell. Charles left after a brief visit, locking the door behind him. When Charles returned 45 minutes later, Voltaire was gone. Her purse, laptop, keys, and robe were left behind, with no signs of a struggle. Charles reported her missing. Voltaire had previously told her father she was afraid of her boyfriend, Dieuseul. While Charles cooperated fully with investigators, Dieuseul refused to speak to police and hired a lawyer. He claimed their relationship had ended months earlier on good terms and denied any involvement.
