On May 23, 1993, Danielle Pitcher attended church with her five younger siblings in Sunizona, Arizona. Around 1:00 p.m., her mother, Dorothy Pitcher, asked if Danielle would join her for a walk to the local RV Park Store to buy cigarettes for Danielle’s father, John “Jack” Pitcher. The store was located about three miles from their home, at the intersection of Highway 666 (now Highway 191) and Highway 181 in Cochise County. On their way, they stopped by the home of Dorothy’s older daughter, who declined to join them but asked them to stop by later for dinner. At the store, they purchased cigarettes, ice cream cones, and made a call from the pay phone before heading home. Their home did not have a phone. They were last seen leaving the store, but never arrived home. Search dogs traced their scent to about 1.5 miles along their route home, but no further. John Pitcher, Dorothy’s husband of 27 years, was cleared as a suspect after passing two polygraph. He passed away in 1998.
