Santos was last seen in Naples, Florida, on October 1, 2003, after a minor car accident. Deputy Steven Calkins cited him for reckless driving and driving without a license or insurance, then drove him away in his patrol car. Later, when Santos's boss tried to bail him out, they found he was never booked. Calkins claimed he changed his mind and dropped Santos off at a Circle K store, where he last saw him walking toward the pay phones.
