Janie Lindsey, a mother of two from Atwood, Tennessee, was a well-known community figure, having co-owned the local restaurant P.J.’s with her late husband. At the time of her disappearance, she was living with and caring for her elderly parents. Janie had been in a relationship with Donald Beard. On October 9, 2004, Janie canceled plans to babysit for her daughter, Phelicia, claiming her vehicle wouldn’t start. Later that day, Janie’s father recalled a man arriving to help start the car, after which Janie and the man left. A family member later reported seeing Janie and Donald together at Murphy’s gas station in Huntingdon, Tennessee, at about 6 p.m. on October 10. This was the last confirmed sighting of Janie. On October 13, 2004, Janie’s car was found near Grooms Road and Bobbitt Road in Carroll County, parked at the home of Donald’s acquaintance. The acquaintance told authorities Donald and Janie had come to buy a van, and the two left in it, with Donald claiming he would return for the car—but never did. Donald passed away from natural causes in 2006.
