Hamby was last seen on January 3, 2018. She and another woman were in a detox program at Lakeland Community Hospital in Haleyville, Alabama. Late on the night of January 2, following a disagreement with someone at the facility, they left the program. Her friend dropped her off at a residence on Elgin Cochran Road in Hackleburg, Alabama. According to three witnesses—Eric Edwards and siblings Alicia and Derek Motes—a disagreement occurred shortly after 6:00 a.m. on January 3, after which Hamby left the house. She never returned. The temperature that morning was only six degrees, and Hamby was not wearing a coat when she left. Her last communication was with Edwards. At 7:51 a.m., she sent him a text saying, “Hey, they ain’t gonna shoot me for walking,” followed by two calls to his phone at 7:53 a.m. After that, she was never heard from again. Multiple search warrants have been executed, and Edwards and the Motes siblings have undergone polygraph examinations, but no one has been charged.
