Joseph Michael Gutierrez and his friend, Christopher Jedra (both of Detroit) were camping near South Point near Alpena, MI. Jedra's parents dropped them off on September 3, 1983, with plans to pick them up the following day. When they arrived at the campsite, they found it intact, but the boys were nowhere to be found. Extensive ground, water and air searches were conducted and on September 19, 1983, Christopher's body was located 1/2 mile offshore of North Point. Joseph has not been located. It is suspected that the boys attempted a swim to an offshore island and drown.
