Kimberly was last seen on April 3, 1987, with her mother, Sarah, and her motherโs friend, Linda. They attended a gospel concert in Walterboro, South Carolina, and were traveling home to Orangeburg County when they disappeared. A witness saw Lindaโs 1977 blue Lincoln on Route 15, followed by another car, but couldnโt describe the second vehicle or its occupants. Sarahโs husband, Phillip, arrived home from work at midnight and was initially unconcerned, assuming his wife and daughter were staying with relatives or Linda. When they had not returned by 6:00 a.m. the following morning, he contacted the police. On April 5, a friend of Lindaโs husband, called to inform him that he had spotted their Lincoln abandoned on the side of the road near the intersection of Highway 15 and Highway 176 in Dorchester County. The car had a blown freeze plug, causing the engine to overheat. In 1990, Sarahโs credit card was used at a local mall, but the signature didnโt match hers. The identity of the user remains unknown.
