Around 11:00am on April 7, 1974, Leigh left his home on State Road carrying his shoeshine kit prepared to work at the racetrack, shining shoes. He stopped at a restaurant in Beachmont Square, where he had a sandwich and a glass of milk. He asked the owner to hold onto his shoeshine kit for a few minutes, promising to return, but he never came back. Leigh was last believed to be wearing cut off blue shorts, sneakers and a white T-shirt with the words, "Try it, you'll like it". He is described to have sandy blonde hair and brown eyes.
