Fugate-Jones was last seen in Fisty, Kentucky, on May 7, 2015. She had recently left an inpatient drug rehabilitation facility in Harlan, Kentucky, and returned to her grandmother’s home in Fisty, where her two young sons resided. On the morning of her disappearance, Fugate-Jones packed her belongings and was picked up by a female friend. Before leaving, she placed a note under her son’s pillow, explaining that she was searching for a place where they could all be together and planned to return in two or three days. Later that day, Fugate-Jones and her friend encountered a male acquaintance. According to his account, she left with him, and they eventually ended up at a reclaimed strip mine. He stated that while there, Fugate-Jones ran into the nearby woods and never returned. She has not been seen or heard from since.
