Summary

Rima was last seen on May 15, 1985, walking home from St. Helen’s Elementary School in Longview, Washington. She stopped briefly to show a neighbor an art project but never arrived home and has not been seen since. Joseph Kondro, a family friend, was reportedly driving to a store around the time Rima disappeared. Although he was questioned in 1985, no evidence initially linked him to her case. In 1997, Kondro was charged with the abduction and murder of another young girl. In 1999, he confessed to Rima’s murder as part of a plea deal to avoid the death penalty. Kondro admitted using a password, “Unicorn,” to lure Rima, taking her to a swimming hole on Germany Creek where he killed and buried her. Despite searches, her remains were never found. Kondro died of natural causes in prison in 2012.
