Murrow attended a rodeo in Cherokee, Oklahoma, with his stepson on August 23, 2014.

The following day, he texted his stepson from Alva, stating he was traveling to Enid to collect payment for a recently sold pickup truck. He then planned to drive to either Oakwood or Selling, Oklahoma, to visit one of two former girlfriends, but he never arrived at either location. Shortly after 10:00 p.m., Murrow sent a text message to one of his former girlfriends. This was his last known contact, and he has not been seen or heard from since. Days later, his Dodge Dakota pickup truck was found locked and abandoned approximately four miles west of Canton Lake in Dewey County, Oklahoma, near a cattle guard. There were no signs of a struggle, and his personal belongings were missing from the vehicle.
